MEDICAL ADHESIVES

The medical adhesives available are a relatively new innovation and an exciting new addition to the various methods currently available for the non-surgical treatment of varicose veins.

Medical adhesives are medical grade ‘superglues’ which are used to treat varicose veins. The treated vein immediately solidifies and produces an inflammatory reaction which destroys the vein wall which is subsequently reabsorbed. Once the diseased vein is treated the circulating blood is rerouted to other normal veins in the leg.

Although this is a relatively new means of treating varicose veins these medical adhesives (Cyanoacrylates) have been in use since the 1950s.

Other uses include: Wound repair such as lacerations, dental, orthopaedic and in the treatment of brain aneurysms.

At Specialist Vein Care we utilise two different forms of this treatment. Each patient is individually uated to determine the best form of therapy for their particular problem.

VeinOff

With VeinOff, medical grade superglue (cyanoacrylate) is introduced into the diseased vein via a special small catheter. This effectively seals the vein shut. The vein and the glue are then reabsorbed by the body over a few months. This all occurs in the background with the patient being unaware of this occurring.

This treatment is performed under ultrasound guidance and with the use of local anaesthetic.

Once the diseased vein is treated the circulating blood is rerouted to other normal veins in the leg.

This procedure is performed as a “walk-in, walk-out” procedure with the patient being able to immediately return to their normal routines and duties.

The procedure is extremely safe.

There is no need for tumescent anaesthetic.

No risk of nerve damage or skin burns.

Compared to other forms of therapy such as Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy, Phlebectomy, Endovenous Laser Ablation or Surgery there is no requirement for the use of compression stockings after therapy.

This is used mainly for long segments of abnormal truncal veins(such as great or small saphenous veins) and smaller veins.

These treatments are often performed in conjunction with other methods of treating veins such as endovenous laser ablation and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy.

At Specialist Vein Care we utilise three different forms of this treatment. Each patient is individually uated to determine the best form of therapy for their particular problem. The ideal method treatment is then determined and discussed with the patient.

VeinOff is available on the Medicare Benefit Scheme

VenaBlock

With VenaBlock, medical grade superglue (cyanoacrylate) is injected directly into the diseased vein under ultrasound control.

This effectively seals the vein shut. The vein and the glue are then reabsorbed by the body over a few months. This all occurs in the background with the patient being unaware of this occurring.

This is performed under ultrasound guidance and with the use of local anaesthetic.

This is used mainly for short segments of abnormal truncal veins (such as great or small saphenous veins), very tortuous veins and perforating veins.
